Product name 1,2-dichloroethane
Synonyms ethylene dichloride
GOST 1942-86
CAS 107-06-2

1,2-Dichloroethane (sym-dichloroethane, ethylene dichloride) is a clear, colorless liquid with sweet smell. It is miscible with most organic solvents and slightly soluble in water.

1,2-Dichloroethane is manufactured:

  • by ethylene chlorination in liquid phase at 50-100°C in the presence of FeCl3:

    CH2=CH2 + Cl2 --> C2H4Cl2

  • by oxidative ethylene chlorination in vapour phase at 210-260°C in the presence of CuCl2 on Al2O3 as a catalyst:

    CH2=CH2 + 2HCl + 0.5O2 --> C2H4Cl2 + H2O

  • About 80% of the world's consumption of 1,2-dichloroethane, the major application is in the production of vinyl chloride monomer. This reaction is conducted at >250°C in vapour phase:

    C2H4Cl2 --> CH2=CHCl + HCl

  • as an intermediate in the manufacture of ethylene diamine, ethylene glycol, polysulfide rubbers and other chemical products and drugs;
  • as a apolar aprotic process solvent, degreasing agent and paint remover;
  • as a fumigant;

  • Manufacturer(s) JSC Caprolactam
    JSC Kaustik
    Chemical structure of 1,2-dichloroethane
