1,4-Butanediol (tetramethylene glycol, 1,4-butylene glycol) is an alcohol derivative of the alkane butane, carrying two hydroxyl groups. It is a colorless viscous liquid with sweetish taste; miscible with water, alcohols, acetone. boundedly soluble in ether, chlorobenzene; almost insoluble in non-polar solvents.

1,4-butanediol is a typical glycol. It can form esters with acids, acid anhydrides and chloroanhydrides. Being dehydrogenated in gas or liquid phase at 200 °C on copper salt catalyst gives gamma-butyrolactone with 90% yeild.

Production.

  • Almost 1,4-butanediol in chemical industry is produced by the method of reacting acetylene with two equivalents of formaldehyde (Cu-Bi catalyst, 90-100 °C; 0.5-0.6 MPa)(Reppe process). This reaction results in 1,4-butynediol which is subsequently hydrogenated at 150-160 °C and 20 MPa on Cu-Ni-Cr catalyst to give 1,4-butanediol.
  • Acetoxylation of butadiene on palladium catalyst with following acetate hydrolysis:

    H2C=CH-CH=CH2 + CH3COOH + 1/2O2 --> H3COC(O)CH2CH=CHCH2C(O)OCH3 --> HO(CH2)4OH

  • hydrogenation of maleic anhydride into tetrahydrofurane with its following hydrolysis.

    Uses.

    1,4-Butanediol is used industrially as

  • solvent;
  • in the manufacture of some types of plastics and fibers (polyurethanes and polyesters). Being treated with terephthalic acid forms polybutylene terephthalate (PBT);
  • is used for the synthesis of γ-butyrolactone (GBL).
  • Plasticizer and wetting agent for gelatine, cellophane, special papers, tobaccos.
