p-Dichlorobenzene (para-dichlorobenzene, 1,4-dichlorobenzene, 1,4-DCB) is a colorless crystalline solid. It is soluble in ethanol, acetone, diethyl ether, benzene, chloroform, carbon disulfide, but practically insoluble in water.

Production.

  • primarily p-dichlorobenzene is manufactured as a by-product of chlorobenzene production. Solution which was obtained after chlorobenzene distillation contains para- and ortho-dichlorobenzene in proportion of 3:2. Para- isomer is separated by fractional freezing at 0-5°C with subsequent centrifugation. o-Dichlorobenzene is isolated then by distillation.
  • by the chlorination reaction of benzene in the presence of iron(III) chloride. This reaction leads to similar ratio of ortho- and para-dichlorobenzene, but small amount of the meta isomer is performed. The mixture is separated as in the previous method;

    Uses.

    p-Dichlorobenzene is used:

  • as insecticide and germicide to control fruit borers and ants, moths, blue mold in tobacco seed beds, and mildew and mold on leather or fabrics (tabulated in some countries);
  • as a tanning agent for leather;
  • as a starting material for manufacture of 2,5-dichloronitrobenzene and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene;
  • as an intermediate in the production of polyphenylene sulfide, a plastic used in the electrical and electronics industries;
  • as a space deodorant in products such as room deodorizers, urinal and toilet bowl blocks (tabulated in some countries);
  • in the manufacture of a variety of yellow, red, and orange pigments, dyes, pharmaceuticals, and resin-bonded abrasives;

  • Manufacturer(s) JSC Ufachemprom
