Product name 1-butylene
Synonyms 1-butene
GOST no data
CAS 106-98-9

1-Butylene (1-butene) is a colorless, highly flammable gas with unpleasant odor. It is soluble in alcohols, diethyl ether, hydrocarbons; practically insoluble in water. 1-Butylene is a typical olefin. It can be easily polymerized into polybutylene in the presence of Lewis acids or Ziegler-Natta catalyst. Catalytic dehydrogenation of 1-butylene results in butadiene.

1-Butylene is commercially manufactured:

  • as a byproduct of the steam cracking process used to produce ethylene and other olefins;
  • by catalytic n-butane dehydrogenation at 560-600°C and pressure 0.1-0.2 MPa in the presence of Al-Cr catalyst;

  • as an intermediate product in manufacture of methyl-ethyl keton (MEK), butadiene;
  • as a raw material in production of polybutylene;
  • as an additive to make high density polyethylene and linear low density polyethylene;
