Product name 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene
Synonyms 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene
GOST no data
CAS 97-00-7

2,4-Dinitrochlorobenzene is a yellow crystalline compound which exists in one stable and two labile modifications. 2,4-Dinitrochlorobenzene is almost insoluble in water and cold ethanol but soluble in hot ethanol, ether, chloroform, benzene, toluene, ethyl acetate, acetone, carbon disulfide. Being treated with the mixture of concentrated HNO3 and H2SO4 at 130°C 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene converts into 2,4,6-trinitrochlorobenzene.

In chemical industry 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene is produced by two-stage nitration of chlorobenzene with the mixture of concentrated HNO3 and H2SO4. First stage is conducted at 50°C and the second one at 65. Then the reacion mixture is diluted with 0.5% soda solution. 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene is washed with water and dried.

  • 2,4-Dinitrochlorobenzene is used mainly in azo dyes production.
  • Also it applied in some fungicides manufacturing.
  • 2,4-Dinitrochlorobenzene is an intermediate product in manufacturing of explosives (tetryl, hexyl, hexanitrodiphenyl, picric acid).
