2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol is a colorless, volatile, sublimable crystalline solid. It is soluble in acetone, ethanol, aliphatic hydrocarbons, benzene, esters. 2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol easily reacts with oxidants to give very stable phenoxyl radical.

Production.

  • 2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol is manufactured by cresol alkylation with isobutylene on acidic catalyst (H2SO4, polyphosphorous acid or alkylsulfonic acids);
  • From phenol as a starting material (see scheme below). Phenol is alkylated with isobutylene in anhydrous medium (catalyst - aluminium phenolate, T<100°C). Then aminomethylation take place (80-100°C, methanol, Ni/Al). Resulting product is obtained after hydrogenolysis. Yield is almost quantitative;

    Uses.

  • 2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol is used as non-coloring heat stabilizing agent for synthetic rubber, color rubber products, number of resins, polypropylene fiber;
  • Polymerization inhibitor in process of oxidation of allyl alcohol to glycerine;
  • antioxidant for vitamins, oils and fats;
  • drug to fight against urinary bladder cancer;
