Product name 2-ethylhexanol
Synonyms isooctanol
isooctyl alcohol
GOST 26624-85
CAS 104-76-7

2-Ethylhexanol is a colorless, clear, slightly viscous liquid with a pleasant flowery odor. It is miscible in most organic solvents, but almost insoluble in water.

2-Ethylhexanol is manufactured in two-stage process. On the first stage aldol condensation of butyric aldehyde take place at 80-140°C and 0.2-0.6 MPa to form 2-ethylhexanal, which is hydrogenized on nickel or copper catalyst above 100°C:

2CH3(CH2)CHO --> CH3(CH2)2CH=C(C2H5)CHO --> CH3(CH2)3CH(C2H5)CH2OH

The primary use of 2-ethylhexanol is in the manufacture of plasticizers - bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), dioctyl sebate and others. Also it is applied as:

  • solvent for plastics and varnishes;
  • extracting agent for rare and radioactive metals from ores and minerals;
  • antifoaming agent and emulsion stabilizer;
  • perfumes component;

  • Manufacturer(s) JSC Salavatnefteorgsintez
