2-Ethylhexyl chloroformate is a colorless clear liquid with a pungent odor. It is easily hydrolysed by water and alkali solutions. It is reacts with primary and secondary amines to give carbamates (ester of an amide of carbonic acid).
2-Ethylhexyl chloroformate is manufactured by the reaction of phosgene COCl2 with 2-ethylhexyl alcohol.
2-Ethylhexyl chloroformate is an intermediate in production of insecticides, fungicides, herbicides and biocides. It is used in manufacture of urethanes and organic peroxides.
