Product name 2-naphthol
Synonyms beta-naphthol
GOST 923-80
CAS 135-19-3

beta-Naphthol is a colorless crystalline compound with a weak phenol odor. It is soluble in short alcohols, diethyl ether, chloroform, acetone, benzene, almost insoluble in water. Chemical properties of 2-naphthol are typical for phenols.

2-Naphthol is manufactured:

  • by 2-chloronaphthalene hydrolysis with water at 270-290°C in the presence of CuO/SiO2 as a catalyst;
  • by melting of naphthalene-2-sulfonic acid sodium salt with NaOH at 300-315°C;

    2-Naphthol is used:

  • in making azo dyes, pigments, fluorescent whiteners, tanning agents, antioxidants, and antiseptics;
  • as a starting material to produce 2-hydroxynaphthalene-3-carbonic acid, 2-hydroxynaphthalenesulfonic acids, 2-naphthylamine, 2-phenylnaphthylamine;
  • as a strong antiseptic;
  • as an antioxidant for turpentine and rubbers;
  • to manufacture 2-ethoxynaphthalene (fragrance);
  • 2-naphthol is the part of fungicides;
  • to make 1,1'-binaphthol (binol). Optically active binol is widely used in asymmetric synthesis of rearrangements, epoxidations, reductions.
