4-Nitroaniline is a yellow crystalline solid. It is readily soluble in hot water, ethanol, diethyl ether, benzene, acetone, chloroform, but has a low solubility in cold water.

Production.

4-Nitroaniline is produced by interaction of p-nitrochlorobenzene with 40% ammonia solution in water at 170-197°C and 5 MPa. Reaction lasts for 4-7 hours.

Uses.

4-Nitroaniline is applied:

  • as diazo component to produce insoluble azo dyes directly on textile fibers (Azoamine Red 2H);
  • as an intermediate in manufacture of disperse and anionic dyes, pigments, optical bleaching agents;
  • in preparation of p-phenylenediamine, 2-chloro-4-nitroaniline, 2,6-dichloro-4-nitroaniline;
  • as a corrosion inhibitor;
  • in preparation of antioxidants, fuel additives, pesticides, antiseptic agents, medicines for poultry and pharmaceutical synthesis;
