acetic anhydride

Product name acetic anhydride
Synonyms acetyl oxide
GOST 21039-75
CAS 108-24-7

Acetic anhydride (ethanoic anhydride) is clear liquid and smells strongly of vinegar. It is soluble in benzene, diethyl ether, ethanol, chloroform, tetrahydrofurane; slightly soluble in cold water.

  • The production of acetic anhydride by condensation of acetic acid is a major application using about 25% to 30% of the global production of acetic acid.
  • By acetic acid decomposition in presence of triethylphosphate at 680-720°C and pressure 26.2-52.4 kP:

    CH3COOH --> CH2=C=O
    CH2=C=O + CH3COOH --> 2(CH3CO)2O

  • By oxidation of acetaldehyde jointly with acetic acid in presence of copper-cobalt catalyst at 50-60°C (acetic anhydride content in reaction mixture is 16-18%, common acetaldehyde conversion by products sum is 94-96%)
  • Methylacetate carbonylation in presence of homogeneous Rh catalysts;

    Common uses of acetic anhydride are as acetylating agent in the production of cellulose acetate, vinyl acetate, dimethyl acetamide, dyes, in the chemical synthesis of acetyl salicylic acid from salicylic acid, and in the production of heroin (diacetylmorphine) from morphine.
