Acetone cyanohydrin is clear colorless liquid; miscible in water, alcohol, acetone, benzene, ether; almost insoluble in petroleum ether, carbon disulfide. Acetone cyanohydrin possesses chemical properties characteristic for hydroxynitriles. Being treated with concentrated H2SO4 acetone cyanohydrin gives methacrylic acid CH2=C(CH3)COOH; reaction with P2O5 or SOCl2 results in methacrylonitrile CH2=C(CH3)CN.


Acetone cyanohydrin is produced by interaction of acetone (excess) with HCN in presence of water solutions of NaOH, KOH or Na2CO3 at the temperature <30°C, usually in continuous process. Because of product is non-stable in alkaline medium, it is acidified with H2SO4 up to pH 1-2. Then acetone cyanohydrin is rectified. Process yield is 90-95%.


  • Acetone cyanohydrin is an important intermedaite to prepare methacrylamide, methacrylonitrile, azo-bis-isobutyronitrile, methacrylic acid, methacrylates and methylmethacrylates.
