Ammonium thiocyanate NH4NCS is a colorless hygroscopic crystalline compound. It is soluble in water (54% wt at 0°C and 61% wt at 20°C). It dissolves exothermically. Ammonium thiocyanate also soluble in liquid ammonia, ethanol, methanol and acetone. It forms hydrates and ammines. It was found that ammonium rhodanide molecule has thiocyanate geometry - NH4S=C=N. Being heated above 140°C ammonium rhodanide slowly converts into thiourea H2NC(S)NH2. Ammonium thiocyanate is of low toxicity, after ingestion it can cause xanthopsia - vision of objects in yellow light.


Ammonium rhodanide is manufactured:

  • by absorption of cyanides containing in coke oven gases with ammonium polysulfides solution;
  • by interaction of ammonia with carbon disulfide:

    2NH3 + CS2 --> NH4NCS + H2S


    Ammonium thiocyanate is used:

  • as a feedstock in commercial thiourea preparation;
  • as dressing agent in fabric dyeing;
  • for steel etching;
  • as a stabilizer or accelerator in photography;
  • as a solution component in electroplating;
  • as a reagent in analytical chemistry in rhodanometric and mercurimetric haloids and cyanides analyses. Also it used in photocolorimetry for iron, cobalt, molibdenum and other ions determination;
  • as a source in making other inorganic thiocyanates such as copper, sodium, calcium, potassium and other derivatives;
  • as an intermediate in fungicides, pesticides and pharmaceuticals production;
  • as a component of freezing solutions;
