Benzenesulfonic acid is a colorless, very hygroscopic crystalline solid. It is soluble in water, alcohols, acetone; slightly soluble in benzene; almost insoluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons. Benzenesulfonic acid forms stable mono- and semihydrate. It is a strong acid; being treated with alcohols it forms esters.

Production.

Benzenesulfonic acid is produced by bubbling of superheated benzene vapor (150-160°C) through heated up to 100-120°C 94-96% H2SO4; product is isolated as sodium salt.

Uses.

  • Catalyst for polymerization, depolymerization, dehydration, alkylation, esterification and ether formation.
  • Benzenesulfonic acid is used to manufacture phenol;
