Boric acid is a colorless crystalline solid, soluble in water, methanol, ethanol, acetone, glycerine, liquid ammonia, dioxane, pyridine. Almost insoluble in ether. Boric acid refers to 3 compounds: orthoboric acid (H3BO3), metaboric acid (HBO2) and tetraboric acid (H4B4O7). Usually boric acid means orthoboric acid. It is a weak acid.

Production.

Boric acid is produced form natural borates by their treatment with H2SOr at 100°C. then after filtration and cooling resulting product is obtained.

Uses.

  • as an antiseptic;
  • to treat yeast and fungal infections such as candidiasis;
  • as a relatively nontoxic insecticide, for killing cockroaches, termites, fire ants, fleas, and many other insects. It is a component of many commercial insecticides;
  • in nuclear power plants to slow down the rate at which fission is occurring;
  • in pyrotechnics to prevent the amide-forming reaction between aluminum and nitrates;
  • in heat resistant glass and in fireproofing fabrics;
  • n electroplating baths;
  • in leather manufacturing, porcelain enamels and in hardening steels;
  • as a component of skin lotions, cosmetics and food preservatives;
