carbon disulfide

Product name carbon disulfide
GOST 19213-73
CAS 75-15-0

Carbon disulfide is colorless liquid with a pleasant odor that is like that of chloroform, although it is usually impure yellowish with an unpleasant odor due to traces of other sulphurous species, such as carbonyl sulfide. Carbon disulfide molecule has a linear structure. In inert atmosphere it is substantially decomposes above 300°C to give graphite and sulfur. Carbon disulfide is practically insoluble in water, but miscible with ethanol, acetone, diethyl ether, chloroform.

  • from preheated hydrocarbons (natural gas) with vaporized sulfur at 500-700°C in the presence of a catalyst (silica gel):

    CH4 + 0.5S8 --> CS2 + 2H2S

  • by combining carbon (or coke) and sulfur at 750-1000°C;

    Carbon disulfide is used:

  • in the production of viscose rayon fibers, where it is used in cellulose xanthate preparation;
  • as an intermediate in carbon tetrachloride manufacture;
  • as a solvent, extracting agent, agent for rubber vulcanization;
  • as an intermediate product in organosulfur derivatives syntheses;
  • in the industrial fields of refining rubber, flotation agent, rubber chemicals, regenerated cellulophane;

  • Manufacturer(s) JSC Volzhsky Orgsynthese
