chloral

Product name chloral
Synonyms trichloroacetaldehyde
trichloroethanal
GOST no data
CAS 75-87-6

Chloral is a clear, colorless liquid with a pungent odor. It is soluble in diethyl ether, alcohols and most other organic solvents. It is almost insoluble in water, but reacts with it to form soluble chloral hydrate CCl3C(OH)2, a narcotic substance notorious for its use in "knockout drops". Chloral also reacts with other nucleophilic agents to form stable adducts, e.g. interaction with ammonia results in crystalline chloralammonia CCl3C(OH)NH2. Chloral slowly polymerizes upon storage to form white amorphous solid - metachloral or parachloral which can be easily depolymerized at 160-180°C to release monomeric chloral.

Production.

Chloral is produced by ethanol chlorination in two-cascade reactor:

C2H5OH + 4Cl2 --> Cl3CCHO + 5HCl

Uses.

  • in making pesticides and herbicides (e.g. reaction of chloral with chlorobenzene results in DDT);
  • as an intermediate in preparation of pharmaceuticals;

  • Manufacturer(s) JSC Khimprom
