chlorine dioxide

Product name chlorine dioxide
GOST no data
CAS 10049-04-4

Chlorine dioxide is yellow gas, in liquid phase - orange-red; solid is yellow. Its molecule has non-linear geometry: OClO angle is 117°, Cl-O bond distance is 0.1475nm. Chlorine dioxide is boundedly soluble in water (26.1 g/l at 25°C), acetone, diethyl ether, hexane, benzene, toluene, methanol, ethanol. In liquid phase and at concentrations greater than 15% volume in air, it explosively decomposes to release chlorine and oxygen. The decomposition is initiated by light. Commercial chlorine dioxide is produced as a solution in water. Chlorine dioxide is an oxidizing agent. Thus, it can selectively oxidize organic sulfides into sulfoxides and sulfones.

More than 95% of chlorine dioxide is produced industrially by reducing of sodium chlorate with hydrogen peroxide, sulfur dioxide or hydrogen chloride in water solution:

2NaClO3 + 4HCl --> 2NaCl + 2ClO2 + Cl2 + 2H2O

  • as a chlorine substitution for pulp, cellulose, paper and synthetic fibers bleaching;
  • a drinking and technological water disinfectant;
  • for waste water treatment;
