Product name chloroform
Synonyms trichloromethane
GOST 20015-88
CAS 67-66-3

Chloroform is clear colorless volatilie liquid with sweet smell. It is miscible with most organic solvents. Chloroform is practically insoluble in water, but forms azeotropic mixture with it. Upon exposure to light and oxygen from air it is slowly broken down to phosgene, hydrochloric acid, and chlorine.

Chloroform is produced jointly with methylene chloride by direct chlorination of methane in vapour phase at 510-520°C and proportion of methane to chlorine 4-5:1.
