Cobalt is a hard ferromagnetic silver-white element. The Curie temperature is of 1388 K with 1.6~1.7 Bohr magnetons per atom.
Cobalt is extracted from its ores by hydrometallurgical or pyrometallurgical process with following reductive fusion of its oxide. Final cobalt purification is performed by electrolysis of sulfate solution.
Largest use of cobalt is as component of steels and other alloys. Also cobalt is used for magnets and magnetic recording media construction, catalysts for the petroleum and chemical industries preparation, drying agents for paints, varnishes, and inks, pigments (cobalt blue and cobalt green), battery electrodes, electroplating.
