Decabromodiphenyl oxide (bis(pentabromophenyl) ether) is white or off-white powder. It is practically insoluble in water, with partly soluble in acetone, chlorobenzene, o-xylene and other organic solvents. When heated to decomposition, decabromodiphenyl oxide emits toxic fumes of bromine gas.
Industrial preparation of decabromodiphenyl oxide is based on complete bromination of diphenyl oxide;
Decabromodiphenyl oxide is used as a fire retardant additive to thermoplastic resins, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamides, polystyrene, adhesives, polyester fibers, paints. It is applied in wire and cable, textile coatings, electrical and electronic equipments, automotive parts, construction materials, textile backcoatings and textile blends.
