Synonyms decalin
bicyclo[4.4.0]decane
GOST no data
CAS 91-17-8

Decalin a bicyclic organic compound, is a colorless liquid with an aromatic odor. It is miscible with diethyl ether, chloroform; boundedly soluble in methanol and ethanol; with low solubility in glacial acetic acid; pracrically insoluble in water. It occurs as cis- and trans-isomers. The trans form is energetically more stable. The commercial decalin is the mixture of cis- and trans- isomers (typically 77:23). It easily forms explosive organic peroxides upon storage in the presence of air.

Production.

Decalin is produced by hydrogenation of naphthalene in a fused state at 100-400°C in the presence of a platinum or nickel catalyst;

Uses.

  • as an industrial solvent in preparing dyes, plasticizers, and insecticides;
  • as a degreasing agent and dye carrier;
  • as a fuel additive;
  • as a solvent for lacquers, varnishes, fats, waxes, polymers and resins;
  • in heat transfer fluid;
  • for ore flotation;

  • Manufacturer(s) JSC Angarsk catalysts and organic synthesis plant
