Product name dichloromethane
Synonyms methylene chloride
GOST 9968-86
CAS 75-09-2

Methylene chloride is a colorless, volatile liquid with sweet odor. It is readily soluble in most organic solvents, but practically insoluble in water.

Methylene chloride is produced:

  • by vapour phase methane chlorination at 510-520°C (jointly with chloroform). Unreacted methane and methyl chloride after cooling and refining from hydrogen chloride are recycled into reactor. Methylene chloride in isolated from reaction mixture by rectification;
  • by liquid phase methyl chloride chlorination at 80-90°C in the presence of N,N'-azo-bis-isobutyronitrile;

    Dichloromethane is used:

  • due to ability to dissolve a wide range of organic compounds it is an ideal solvent for many chemical processes;
  • as a paint and varnish stripper and a degreaser;
  • in the food industry to decaffeinate coffee and to prepare extracts of hops and other flavorings;
  • as an aerosol spray propellant and as a blowing agent for flexible polyurethane foams;

  • Manufacturer(s) JSC Khimprom
