Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD, tricyclo[5.2.1.02,6]dodeca-3,8-diene, bis(cyclopentadiene), cyclopentadiene dimer) is a colorless, waxy, flammable solid, with a camphor-like odor. It is soluble in petroleum ether, carbon tetrachloride, diethyl ether, acetone, acetic acid. It is slightly soluble in water. When above 100°C dicyclopentadiene decomposes to give cyclopentadiene.
Production.
Dicyclopentadiene is manufactured as a by-product in the steam cracking or from pyrolysis of naphtha and gas oils to ethylene and propylene.
Uses.
Dicyclopentadiene is applied:
in adamantane and its derivatives manufacture;
in preparation of pesticides, insecticides, paints, varnishes, epoxy resin, flame retardants;
as an intermediate in production of hidraulic fluids, glutaraldehyde, antioxidants for rubber, fragnances;
in the production of hydrocarbon resins and unsaturated polyester resins;
in the production of EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) elastomers, metallocenes;
