Dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) is an ester of terephthalic acid and methanol; colorless crystallile compound; almost insoluble in water, ethylene glycol, methanol, chloroform, xylene.


Dimethyl terephthalate is produced by oxidation with air of mixture of p-xylene and methyl p-toluate CH3C6H4COOCH3 at 140-150°C and 0.6 MPa with following esterification with methanol vapours at 250°C and 2.5 MPa. After distillation product is recrystallized from methanol.


Dimethyl terephthalate mainly is used in production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT).
