Bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate is a colorless, clear, viscous, oily, odorless liquid. It is soluble in diethyl ether, benzene, toluene and other organic solvents. Almost insoluble in water. It is compatible with nitrocellulose, ethyl cellulose, most synthetic rubbers, and high-butyryl cellulose acetate butyrates.
Dioctyl adipate is produced by treatment of adipic acid with two equivalents of 2-ethylhexanol. Reaction is catalyzed by acids ir alkalies.
Bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate is used to produce clear films for food packaging applications.
