1,4-dioxane

Product name 1,4-dioxane
Synonyms p-dioxane
diethylene dioxide
GOST no data
CAS 123-91-1

1,4-Dioxane is a clear, colorless, flammable hygroscopic liquid with ether-like odor. It is soluble in diethyl ether, acetone, chloroform and most organic solvents. Dioxane is fully miscible in water, forms azeotrope with it (82% of dioxane by mass, bp 88°C). Dioxane shows most of the chemical properties aliphatic ethers. It is stable under the action of weak oxidizing agents, diluted acids and alkalies. It forms stable complexes with Lewis acids, such as with bromine Br2, SO3, H3PO4, MgR2 and others. Dioxane, similar to many other ethers, accumulates explosive peroxides upon storage on air. Distillation of dioxanes concentrates these peroxides increasing the danger. Appropriate precautions should be taken. To prevent peroxides formation commercial dioxane is inhibited with hydroquinone or BHT.

Production.

1,4-Dioxane is manufactured:

  • by ethylene oxide dimerization;
  • by ethylene glycol distillation in the presence of sulfuric acid;
