Bisphenol A is a colorless crystalline solid. It is soluble in alcohols, acetone, dioxane; almost insoluble in water and hydrocarbons. Bisphenol A forms crystalline adducts with phenols, alcohols, ammonia and amines.
In chemical industry bisphenol A is prepared by condensation of phenol with acetone:
main use is as a monomer in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastic (polycondensation with phosgene);
as a monomer in the manufacture of epoxy resins (polycondensation with epichlorohydrine);
as an antioxidant in plasticizers and in PVC;
as an intermediate product in manufacture of antioxidants and fire retardants;
