Product name disulfur dichloride
Synonyms sulfur(I) chloride
sulfur monochloride
dithiodichloride
GOST no data
CAS 10025-67-9

Disulfur dichloride S2rCl2 is a colorless liquid, but impure samples are often yellow. It decomposes upon standing and smokes in wet air. Disulfur dichloride is readily soluble in ethanol, benzene, diethyl ether, carbon disulfide. Dithiodichloride is hydrolyses by water to release sulfur dioxide SO2, hydrogen sulfude H2S and hydrogen chloride HCl. Interaction with metal oxides and sulfides results in corresponding chlorides and sulfur:

2S2Cl2 + 4H2O --> SO2 + 4HCl + 3/8S8

Production.

Disulfur dichloride is manufacrured:

  • by sulfur chlorination in liquid phase at 130°C followed by rectification:

    S8 + 4Cl2 --> 4S2Cl2

  • as a by-product of chloroform synthesis form carbon disulfide;

    Uses.

    Dithiodichloride is used:

  • as a chlorinating agent for manufacturing chemical compounds inluding sulfur-based dyes, pesticides;
  • as a raw material in sulfur dichloride SCl2 manufacturing;
  • as a vulcanizing agent for rubber and oils additives;
  • as a reagent for preparation of pharmaceuticals;
