ethylene chlorohydrin

Product name ethylene chlorohydrin
Synonyms 2-chloroethanol
2-hydroxyethyl chloride
GOST no data
CAS 107-07-3

Ethylene chlorohydrin is a colorless liquid similar to glycerine with faint, sweet pleasant ether-like odor. It is miscible with water, alcohols, ethers, esters. Ethylene chlorohydrin forms azeotrope with water (42.3% mass of ethylene chlorohydrin; b.p. 97.8°C)

  • primarilly ethylene chlorohydrin is sythesized by bubbling of ethylene and chlorine mixture through 8-10% water ethylene chlorohydrin solution at 60-80°C. These conditions are favourable to form hypochlorous acid HClO which reacts with ethylene.
  • by treatment of ethylene glycol with HCl or S2Cl2;
  • by interaction of ethylene oxide with HCl;

  • in water solution as an antifreeze;
  • as a solvent for celluloses resins, cellulose esters and waxes and as a cleaning agent;
  • as an extraction solvent for the separation of butadiene from hydrocarbon mixtures, for the dewaxing and removing cycloalkanes from mineral oil, for pure lignin and for the refining of rosin;
  • as a hydroxyethylating agent in organic synthesis for manufacture of amines, carbitols, indigo, malonic acid and novocaine;
  • for preparation of dyes, pharmaceuticals, biocides and plasticizers;
  • to produce thiodiglycol;

  • Manufacturer(s) JSC Caprolactam
