Product name ethylene oxide
Synonyms 1,2-epoxyethane
GOST 7568-88
CAS 75-21-8

Ethylene oxide is a colorless flammable gas with a faintly sweet odor. It is readily soluble in water, alcohols, hydrocarbons and most organic solvents. Ethylene oxide is an important big-volume industrial chemical used as an intermediate in the production of ethylene glycol and other chemicals, and as a sterilant for foodstuffs and medical supplies

  • Primarily ethylene oxide is produced by ethylene oxidation with oxygen or air in tubular reactor on a silver catalyst at 200-300°C. Pressures used are in the region of 1-2 MPa.
  • archaic method is based on dehydrochlorination of ethylene chlorohydrin;

  • ethylene oxide is a parent compound for production of ethylene glycols, poly(ethylene) glycols, ethylene oxide glycol ethers, ethanolamines, ethoxylated products of fatty alcohols;
  • as a sterilant for foodstuffs and medical supplies;
  • as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals;

  • Manufacturer(s) JSC "Nizhnekamskneftekhim" Inc.
