isobutyl alcohol

Product name isobutyl alcohol
Synonyms isobutanol
GOST 9536-79
CAS 78-83-1

Isobutyl alcohol is a clear liquid with a strong alcoholic odor. It is miscible with a number of organic solvents. Isobutanol is soluble in water and it forms azeotropic solution with it (26.8% H2O by mass, bp 87.0°C). Isobutyl alcohol is a typical aliphatic alcohol;

  • Isobutanol is primarily produced by oxosynthesis from propylene at 120-160°C and 20-35 MPa:

    CH3-CH=CH2 + CO + H2 --> CH3CH2CH2CHO + (CH3)2CHCHO --> CH3(CH2)3OH + (CH3)2CHCH2OH

  • by Reppe synthesis from propylene:

    CH3-CH=CH2 + 3CO + 2H2O --> n-butanol + isobutanol + 2 CO2

  • as a solvent for a wide variety of chemical and textile processes;
  • as a paint thinner;
  • as a component of hydraulic and brake fluids;
  • as urea- and melamino-formaldehyde resins modifier;
  • isobutanol is an intermediate product in plasticizers, pesticides, food essences and drugs manufacture;
  • in isobutyl acetate, potassium isobutyl xanthate production;

  • Manufacturer(s) JSC Salavatnefteorgsintez
