2-Propanol is a clear, colorless, oily liquid with a strong specific odor. It is soluble in ethanol, methanol, diethyl ether, benzene. Isopropanol is miscible in water and forms azeotrope with it (87.7% of isopropanol by mass, bp 80.2°C). It undergoes all chemical reactions typical of secondary alcohols.


Commercially, isopropanol is prepared from propylene by indirect hydration (strong-acid process) or by direct hydration:


2-Propanol is used:

  • as a solvent in paint, perfume, pharmaceutical and chemical industries;
  • in making of acetone, isopropyl ethers and esters, isopropylamine, isopropyl xanthate and a number of organic chemicals;
  • as an extractant for vegetable oils, natural resins and latex;
  • as a de-icing agent, antifreeze, coolant and heat-exchange medium;
  • as a solvent for cellulose esters;
  • as degreasing and cleaning agent in industry and household;
  • as an alkylating agent in organic synthesis;
  • as a desinfectant;
  • as an intermediate to produce pharmaceuticals;
