methylacrylate

Product name methylacrylate
Synonyms methyl 2-propenoate
acrylic acid methyl ester
GOST no data
CAS 96-33-3

Methyl acrylate is clear , volatile liquid with characteristic strong smell; slightly soluble in water and complete soluble in alcohols, ethers and almost organic solvents; solubility in water at 20 °C is 6g/100g. To prevent its polymerization upon synthesis or storage methyl acrylate is inhibited with hydroquinone, copper salts or 2-naphthol.

Production.

Methyl acrylate is produced from C3 refinery.

  • Direct esterification of acrylic acid (produced by propylene oxidation) with methanol (catalysts - H2SO4, aromatic sulfo-acids or sulfo-cationites);
  • acrylonitrile or ethylene cyanohydrine hydrolysis with following esterification with methanol.
  • Acetylene carbonylation in presence of methanol

    HCCH + CH3OH + CO --> CH2=CHCOOCH3

  • From acrolein and methanol in gas phase; catalysts - metal oxides, 200-400 °C

    CH2=COCHO + CH3OH + O2 --> CH2=CHCOOCH3

    Uses.

    Methyl acrylate is a key ingredient in the production of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), polyacrylonitrile fibres and acrylic esters with high alcohols, aminoalcohols, glycols. Methyl acrylate also used in making vitamin B1.
