N-methyl-Pyrrolidone (N-methyl-gamma-butyrolactam) is a keto-pyrrole. 1-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone is a clear liquid, soluble in water, alcohols, acetone, benzene, xylene. It is a typical N-alkylated lactam. Being treated with alkali solutions or concentrated HCl N-methyl-pyrrolidone converts into gamma-(N-methylamino)butyric acid.

Production.

In chemical industry 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone is produced by the reaction of gamma-butyrolactone with CH3NH2 at 200-250°C and 4-20 MPa on Al2O3 or ceolite catalysts.

Uses.

  • N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone is used as a solvent for paint stripping and resins;
  • cleaner for polymeric residues;
  • metal finishing;
  • printed circuit board manufacturing;
  • SBR latex production;
  • extraction of acetylene and butadiene;
  • dehydration of natural gas;
  • lube oil processing;
