Product name nitromethane
GOST no data
CAS 75-52-5

Nitromethane is a clear, colorless, slightly viscous, highly polar liquid with almond-like odor. It is readily soluble in almost organic solvents, excluding aliphatic hydrocarbons; boundedly soluble in water. Nitromethane forms azeotrope with water (76.4% nitromethane by mass, bp 83.6°C).

Industrially, nitromethane is produced by destructive oxidation of lowest alkanes (e.g. propane) with 50-70% nitric acid at 500-700°C in flow reactor.

  • as a solvent for cellulose ester varnishes and resins;
  • as a solvent in aromatic hydrocarbons separation from aliphatics;
  • as a racing fuel and single-component rocket propellant;
  • as a polar reaction medium, and as a cleaning solvent;
  • as an intermediate in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, explosives, fibers, coatings;
  • as a stabilizer of halogenated hydrocarbons;
