Sulfamic acid, also known as amidosulfonic acid amidosulfuric acid, aminosulfonic acid, and sulfamidic acid, is colorless crystalline compound. Partially soluble in water, formamide, methanol, acetone, diethyl ether.


  • Interaction of urea with SO3 and H2SO4:

    H2NC(O)NH2 + SO3 + H2SO4 --> 2NH2SO3H + CO2

  • Reaction of ammonia with SO3:

    SO3 + NH3 --> NH2SO3H

  • Interaction of hydroxylamine with SO2:

    NH2OH + SO2 --> NH2SO3H


  • Sulfamic acid is used as an acidic cleaning agents, typically for metals and ceramics. It is a replacement for hydrochloric acid for the removal of rust;
  • Catalyst for esterification process;
  • Dye and pigment manufacturing;
  • Herbicide;
  • Coagulator for urea-formaldehyde resins;
  • Ingredient in fire extinguishing media;
  • Pulp and paper industry as a chloride stabilizer;
