Product name sulfur dichloride
GOST no data
CAS 10545-99-0

Sulfur dichloride SCl2 is a red liquid, soluble in benzene, toluene and chlorinated hydrocarbons. It is hydrolyses with water to release SO2, H2S and HCl. Sulfur dichloride is one of the sulfur chlorination products. Being chlorinated it form sulfur tetrachloride:

SCl2 + Cl2 --> SCl4

Commercially sulfur dichloride is produced by dithiodichloride chlorination:

S8 + 4Cl2 --> 4S2Cl2 + 58.3kJ/mol
S2Cl2 + Cl2 --> 2SCl2 + 40.6kJ/mol

  • as an raw material in laboratory and industrial syntheses for sulfur derivatives preparation;
  • as a precursor to sulfur tetrafluoride SF4;
  • as feedstock in sulfanes SnH2 syntheses (reaction with hydrogen sulfide H2S);
