tetraethylene glycol

Product name tetraethylene glycol
Synonyms tetraglycol
GOST no data
CAS 112-60-7

Tetraethylene glycol is a colorless, viscous, hygroscopic, odorless liquid. It is fully miscible in water, benzene, toluene, styrene, phthalates, ethanol amines, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, methanol, ethanol, acetone and others. It is poorly miscible in aliphatic hydrocarbons.

Tetraethylene glycol is an ethylene glycol tetramer and possesses both ether and alcohol chemical properties. It can be esterified with carboxylic acids, their anhydrides or mineral acids to produce corresponding mono- and di- esters. It can be also hydrolezed in acidic media at increased temperature to form mono-, di- and triethylene glycols.

  • by dehydration of diethylene glycol at 190°C in the presence of alkaline catalysts;
  • jointly with other polyglycols by treatment of ethylene glycol with ethylene oxide;

  • Tetraethylene glycol is more effective extracting agent for aromatic hydrocarbons from products of reforming process than diethylene glycol, which is often used for these purposes. But its application is limited by high cost.
  • as a high-boiling plasticizer, solvent and reaction media;
