Tetralin (1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene) is a colorless, oily liquid with naphthalene odor. It is miscible with higher alcohols, diethyl ether and hydrocarbons; poorly soluble in metanol; practically insoluble in water and liquid ammonia. Tetralin contains in coal tar fractions and in some oils.

Production.

Tetralin is manufactured by selective hydrogenation of naphthalene in a fused state at 180-260°C and 1-1.5MPa on nickel catalyst.

Uses.

Tetralin is applied:

  • as a solvent for fats, resins and lacquers;
  • in preparing dyes, plasticizers, and insecticides;
  • as a proton-donor solvent for coal extraction;
  • as heat transfer fluid at 210-310°C;
  • as raw materials for functional polymers;
  • as component of stove and jet fuels;
  • as an intermediate in pharmaceuticals syntheses;
  • for ore flotation;
