Thionyl bromide is a yellow-orange toxic liquid. Thionyl bromide is soluble in benzene, chloroform, carbon disulfide, carbon tetrachloride; readily reacts with cold water to give hydrogen bromide HBr and H2SO3. It is reacts also with many metals also to give corresponding metal bromides, oxides and sulfides. Thionyl bromide also reacts with alcohols to produce alkyl bromides. Reaction with thionyl chloride is widely used in organic synthesis for introduction of bromo- functional group by nucleophylic substitution.

Production.

Thionyl bromide is prepared commercially by the action of hydrogen bromide on thionyl chloride at 0°C:

SOCl2 + 2HBr --> SOBr2 + 2HCl

Uses.

Thionyl bromide is used as a brominating agent in organic synthesis (e.g. to brominate alfa,beta-unsaturated carbonyls or to prepare alkyl bromides and some other brominated compounds).
