Thionyl chloride is a clear, colorless, toxic liquid with a pungent odor. It is decomposes above 140°C. Thionyl chloride is soluble in benzene, chloroform; reacts with cold water to give hydrogen chloride HCl and H2SO3. It is reacts also with many metals at the temperature near 100°C also to give corresponding metal chlorides, oxides and sulfides. Interaction with carboxylic acids results in acyl chlorides. Thionyl chloride also reacts with alcohols to produce alkyl chlorides. Reaction with thionyl chloride is widely used in organic synthesis for introduction of Cl functional group by nucleophylic substitution.

Thionyl chloride is prepared commercially by several routes:

  • Interaction of sulfur, oxygen and chlorine at 180-200°C in the presence of active carbon as a catalyst;
  • Reaction of sulfur(VI) oxide with sulfur dichloride:

    SO3 + SCl2 --> SOCl2 + SO2

  • By treatment of sulfur dioxide with phosphorus pentachloride:

    SO2 + PCl5 --> SOCl2 + POCl3

    Thionyl chloride is used:

  • as a sulfochlorinating agent to produce polymers;
  • as a chlorinating agent to prepare rubbers, dyes, pharmaceuticals and some other chemicals;
  • as a polymerization accelerator for ethylene derivatives;
  • in organic synthesis to make acyl chlorides and other chlorosubstituted compounds;
