Product name thiourea
Synonyms thiocarbamide
GOST no data
CAS 62-56-6

Thiourea - colorless crystals with bitter taste. Soluble in water, methanol, ethanol, pyridine; almost insoluble in diethyl ether, benzene, CCl4. Being heated higher 130°C converts into ammonium thiocyanate NH4SCN.

  • Thiourea more commonly is synthesized by the reaction of hydrogen sulfide with calcium cyanamide in the presence of carbon dioxide.

    Ca(CN)2 + (NH4)2S + 2H2O --> H2NC(S)NH2 + Ca(OH)2 + 2NH3

  • Isomerization of ammonium thiocyanate higher 160°C:

    NH4SCN <--> H2NC(S)NH2

  • Thiocarbamide also is produced by interaction of ammonia with carbon disulfide at 160°C:

    CS2 + 2NH3 --> H2NC(S)NH2 + H2S

  • Thiourea is commonly employed to convert alkyl halides to thiols;
  • Drugs and dyes syntheses;
  • production of flame retardant resins, and vulcanization accelerators.
  • synthetic resins production;

  • Manufacturer(s) OJSC Navoiyazot
