Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is colorless hygroscopic crystals with a sharp, pungent odor. TCA is soluble in water, acetone, carbon disulfide, methylene chloride. Being boiled in 1,2-dimethoxyethane decarboxylates to give dichlorocarben. Trichloroacetic acid neutralization with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate results in sodium trichloroacetate.

  • Trichloroacetic acid is produced by chloral (trichloroacetaldehyde) oxidation with 42% HNO3 at 60-65°C;
  • Direct chlorination of acetic acid in presence of catalyst or on UV irradiation;

    Trichloroacetic acid main use is in the production of its sodium salt, which is used in many industries, for example, as a herbicide, etching agent and antiseptic.
