Triethanolamine (tris(2-hydroxyethyl)amine, TEA) is a toxic corrosive colorless viscous hygroscopic liquid with an odor similar to ammonia. It is miscible with water, readily soluble in ethanol, methanol, benzene, chloroform, but practically insoluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons.

Production.

Triethanolamine is produced jointly with monoethanolamine and diethanolamine by reacting ethylene oxide with ammonia in the presence of small amounts of water at 90-130°C and pressure 7-10 MPa. Triethanolamine is isolated from the reaction mixture by rectification.

Uses.

  • for scrubbing acidic gases (e.g. H2S, CO2, SO2) from refinery and natural gas streams and in other industrial chemical processes. Diethanolamine scrubbing solution is recycled through a regeneration unit which heats the solution from the scrubber unit to release acidic gases into a purer form and returns the regenerated diethanolamine solution to the scrubber unit again for reuse.
  • as a raw material for detergents, emulsifiers, dispersants, lubricants, fatty acid soaps, concrete additives;
  • in pharmaceutical and cosmetics formulations as a pH balancer;
