Triethylene glycol (TEG) is a colorless, viscous, hygroscopic, odorless liquid with sweetish taste. It is fully miscible with water. lower alcohols, glycols, amines, ketones. Boundedly miscible in diethyl ether, carbon tetrachloride, tetrachloroethylene. Vegetable oils, animal fats, resins, aliphatic hydrocarbons have a poor solubility in triethylene glycol. It forms azeotropes with acenaphthene, diphenyl, glycerol, dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalata and so on. Due to inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bonds formation its water solutions have low freezing points.

TEG possesses chemical properties both ethers and alcohols. It can be esterified with carboxylic acids or their anhydrides to produce mono- and diesters. In acidic media at 200-300°C it hydrolyzes into monethylene glycol and diethylene glycol. TEG interacts with ethylene oxide at 160-200°C to form polyethylene glycol. This reaction accelerates in alkaline media.

Triethylene glycol has a low toxisity than lower glycols.

Production.

Tryethylene glycol is prepared industrially as a byproduct of MEG and DEG making process by ethylene oxide hydration at 160-200°C and pressure 1-1.2MPa with molar ratio ethylene oxide:water = 1:10.

Uses.

Triethylene glycol is applied:

  • as a component of coolants;
  • as an anti-freezing and anti-icing additive;
  • as a dehydrating agent for gases;
  • as a humectant for tobaccoes, printing ink and glues;
  • as a raw material in making plastics and resins;
  • as a solvent for nitrocellulose;
  • as an extracting agent for isolation of aromatic hydrocarbons from mixture with alkanes in oil processing;
  • as a component of brake and hudraulic fluids;
  • as an intermediate in making of pharmaceiticals;
  • when volatilized, as an air disinfectant for bacteria and virus control;
