trimethylamine

Product name trimethylamine
GOST no data
CAS 75-50-3

Trimethylamine is a colorless gas with very strong ammonia-like odor. It is readily soluble in water, alcohols and other organic solvents. Trimethylamine is a strong base. It forms crystalline salts with mineral acids. Reaction with alkylhalides results in quaternary ammonium salts.

Production.

  • Trimethylamine is commercially produced jointly with mono- and dimethylamine by vapor-phase catalytic methanol amination at 350-450°C and pressure 0.6-5.0 MPa. Trimethylamine ratio in reaction mixture is controlled by ammonia amount, reaction temperature or recycling of one or two methylamines. Trimethylamine is isolated from reaction mixture by rectification at 0.4-1.8 MPa.

    Uses.

    Trimethylamine is used:

  • for preparation of choline and choline chloride;
  • in manufacture of quaternary ammonium salts;
  • in manufacture of some drugs and pharmaceuticals;
  • in manufacture of ion exchange resins and phase transfer catalysts;
  • as a raw material for production of some pesticides and oil field chemicals;

  • Manufacturer(s) no data
