zinc chloride

Product name zinc chloride
Synonyms zinc dichloride
GOST no data
CAS 7646-85-7

Zinc chloride is colorless, very hygroscopic, crystalline compound. It is readily soluble in water (432g in 100g of water at 25°C and 614g at 100°C). Also it is soluble in diethyl ether, ethanol, glycerol, acetone. Concentrated aqueous solutions of zinc chloride dissolve starch, silk, and cellulose. ZnCl2 is a mild Lewis acid. Consistent with this character, aqueous solutions of zinc chloride have a pH about 4.

Commercially zinc chloride is produced by treatment of burned ore or secondary raw zinc-containing materials with hydrochloric acid. Anhydrous zinc chloride can be obtained by yhe reaction of chlorine with mossy zinc at 420°C. Finally product is refined by sublimation in chlorine flow at 600-700°C.

  • as a flux for metal cleaning before soldering, because of its ability to dissolve metal oxides;
  • as an antiseptic for wood treatment;
  • as a mordant in dyeing textiles;
  • in electroplating and as electrolyte in batteries;
  • as a catalyst (Lewis acid) in organic synthesis in Friedel-Crafts alkylation, acylation;

  • Manufacturer(s) JSC B.P. Konstantinov Kirovo-Chepetsk Chemical Plant
