m-Toluidine is a colorless, clear, viscous liquid. m-Toluidine tend to darken on storage on air and light. It is readily soluble in diethyl ether, ethanol, acetone, chloroform and most organic solvents. It is poorly soluble in water, but dissolves in acidic aqueous solution. It can be distillated with steam. m-Toluidine show conventional aromatic amine properties. It is a weak basic compound, able to form salts, can be diazotated. Electrophilic substitution occurs into ortho- and para positions with regard to amino-group. m-Toluidine is toxic if inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the skin. It is suspected human carcinogen.
as by-product in the fractional distillation of coal tar;
by hydrogenation of 3-nitrotoluene on nickel, palladium or copper catalysts;
as an intermediate compound in making azo, sulfide and triphenylmethane dyes;
as a starting material for preparation of aminotoluenesulfonic acids;
as an reagent in analitical chemistry for colorimetrical estimation of chlorine and hydrogen peroxide concentration;
in the production of antioxidants, agricultural, pharmaceutical and rubber chemicals.
