n-Hexane is a straight-chain alkane hydrocarbon. It is a colorless, clear, volatile, flammable liquid with a weak smell; almost immiscible in water, but soluble in organic solvents. Their properties are typical for aliphatic hydrocarbons: it is quite inert, but it can be chlorinated, oxidized, sulfonated, nitrated. On reforming conditions n-hexane can be isomerised into isohexanes or dehydrogenated into the benzene.
n-Hexane is produced by the refining of crude oil.
